Verse for Verse is an 8 week interactive workshop that places 10 young, hip-hop writers/performers in a learning environment to introduce them or further their understanding of Shakespeare. The fact that there are countless examples of blank and irregular verse in rap songs and that most people creating this brand of music are unaware of the similarities to Shakespeare is astounding. The aim of the project is to connect an icon of the Western world (Shakespeare) with this new, expansive medium, therefore breathing new life into what has become a one dimensional artform.The project will be punctuated with a live performance, including classical and graffiti artists, an orchestra, and DJs.
The entire project will be shot as a documentary, which will include personal interviews with the participants and their loved ones. Hip-hop stars both past and present and educators from Newark, New Jersey and surrounding areas will also be featured.
