David Willinger

David Willinger has directed at such theatres as LaMama E.T.C., Hartley House Theater, Avalon Repertory Theater, the Laurie Beechman Theatre, the Interart Theatre, and Theater for the New City. Plays he has both written and directed include: Andrea’s Got Two Boyfriends (which has been performed all over America and abroad), Malcolm’s Time, Friday Diego, Bombing the Cradle – with Mahmood Karimi-Hakak, Caprichos, and with Peggy Dean -- The Trail of Tears: A Drama from the Historical Record. He has adapted and directed such novels as Joseph Conrad’s Secret Agent, Camus’ The Stranger, Carson McCullers’ Heart is a Lonely Hunter, Paul Willems’ The Wound, Charles Dickens’ Martin Chuzzlewit, and the musical version of Isaac Bashevis Singer’s novel The Manor—retitled The Open Gate, with music by Arthur Abrams. He has directed world premieres of Gyavira Lasana’s Minus One, Eduardo Machado’s Don Juan in N.Y.C., Adrienne Kennedy’s Diary of Lights and Solo Voyages (with Joseph Chaikin), Jean-Claude Van Itallie’s adaptation of Master and Margarita, Albert Bermel’s Terror of Suspension, René Kalisky’s Jim the Lionhearted, Miranda McDermott’s He Saw His Reflection and most recently, Howard Pflanzer’s The Terrorist. For film he has served as casting and script consultant of the new movie by Sergio Castilla, Take the Bridge. In addition to writing and directing, he has translated some 60 plays which have been published in some 7 volumes. He has received awards from the N.E.A., the N.E.H., the Fulbright Foundation, Drama-Logue, the Jerome Foundation, as well as an award for Rayonnement des Lettres à l’Etranger from the Belgian Ministry of Culture. Is currently the Chairperson of the Theatre Department at City College.
